7,000 RI students win scholarship to U.S.

JAKARTA (Antara): As many as 7,000 Indonesian vocational school students who successfully passed English test will go to Unites States to learn more about cooperatives, an official said.

"We have given international-standard vocational school students across the country a chance of taking part in English test and found that 7,000 of them passed the test," National Education Ministry's director for vocational education Joko Sutrisno said Wednesday.

The scholarship was mainly allocated to vocational school students who studied information and technology as well as hotel service and came from provinces that were frequently visited by investors and foreign tourists like Jakarta, Denpasar, Medan, Makassar, Yogyakarta and Surabaya among other cities.

"We promoted potentials of the 7,000 students to some concerned instances. The Cooperatives and Small Medium Enterprises Ministry has responded to the offer by providing them with the scholarship to the U.S.," Joko said

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the area of spatial statistical modelling applied to mapping schistosomiasis transmission in different settings of Africa. The studentship covers living cost and tuition fees and provides support for 3 years. The starting date is June 1st, 2007 or as soon as possible after that date by negotiation.

Appropriate qualifications are either an MSc in Mathematics with a substantial statistical component or in Biology or other related fields followed by postgraduate qualification in Statistics. Applicants should have also sound computing skills. The successful applicant will register for a PhD degree at the University of Basel.

The main objective of the research project is to develop Bayesian statistical methodology for the analysis of non-stationary, geostatistical data collected over a large number of locations.

This methodology will be applied to a number of schistosomiasis-related datasets from Africa (a) to determine behavioural, environmental and socio-economic risk factors related to schistosomiasis transmission, and (b) to assess spatio-temporal patterns of the disease. The successful candidate will be supervised by PD Dr. Penelope Vounatsou (spatial statistics) and Prof. Jürg Utzinger (epidemiology).

The PhD project is part of a bigger programme on schistosomiasis research funded by the European Union co-ordinated by the DBL–Institute for Health Research and Development in Denmark and involving many other partners in Europe and Africa.

The Indonesian Young Leaders Programme welcomes applications for a PhD scholarship

The application deadline is 15 May 2007.

In sum, 15 PhD scholarships will be made available for Indonesian students to undertake a four year long PhD programme at a Dutch university: 8 within the realm of Islamic Studies, 7 within other disciplines. Applicants should have an MA degree relevant to the proposed topic for the PhD research from either a state sponsored or non-state sponsored Islamic University.

As a PhD student within this programme, you will work in the Netherlands for a period of thirty-two months. The remainder of sixteen months will be used for doing fieldwork in Indonesia. First,you will create a basis for your research with your Dutch supervisor.After some twelve months, you will do your fieldwork in Indonesia in order to return for another twenty months to finalize your thesis.

Requirements
To be eligible for the Indonesian Young Leaders PhD programme, the candidate must meet the following requirements:

be an Indonesian national
have a S2 degree from either a state sponsored or non-state sponsored Islamic Indonesian University
willing to take part in the programme fulltime for the complete duration of the programme, four years
have a high level of English proficiency (TOEFL 550)
be in good health
not be above the age of 40 years (men) or 45 years (women) on the application deadline

The Earth and Planetary Magnetism group within the Institute for Geophysics is seeking 3 post-graduate students to undertake research leading to the award of PhD. The EPM group has broad interests spanning all aspects of magnetism in the Earth and planets, from a theoretical, observational and experimental point of view. Prior study in Earth Science is not a prerequisite (see below).

We seek talented young researchers to undertake the following projects:

Investigation of the role of the magnetic field in the core in the development of textural anisotropy within the inner core, known to exist from seismological studies. This project will involve the use of state-of-the art numerical models of magnetic field generation in the Earth.
Analysis of electromagnetic induction in the Earth from ground-based observations and satellites. Novel approaches to the extraction of relevant signal and modelling of conductivity within the mantle will be developed.
Development of new numerical methods for numerical simulation of convection in the Earth and giant planets; other applications may be to general circulation models of the atmosphere, and climate change. This will involve new mathematical and computational developments.

Supervision of the projects will be jointly by Prof Andrew Jackson and other members of the research group, currently numbering 6 staff. ETH offers outstanding research facilities, including access to supercomputing facilities. Candidates with excellent first degrees in the areas of physics, mathematics, computer science and geophysics are encouraged to apply.

Bacardi launches $20,000 scholarship to help accounting students

Bacardi Limited has launched a new annual $20,000 scholarship to provide financial assistance to a Bermudian student majoring in accounting at an accredited university or college overseas.
The company will also award two annual $5,000 bursaries for the same course of study at accredited institutions overseas.

The $20,000 Bacardi Limited Undergraduate Scholarship Award, renewable up to four years, presents a two pronged education initiative by Bacardi to ensure that Bermudians are represented among the Island's world-renowned accounting profession. The programme includes the scholarship and a paid summer internship during the course of study at Bacardi’s corporate headquarters in Hamilton.

"The largest group of non Bermudians working on the island is in the accounting field," Ralph Morera, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Bacardi Limited said.
"Bacardi wants to ensure that more Bermudians have the opportunity to study and become qualified accountants and then return to the island where the local economy and businesses will benefit from their skills."

Bacardi will also offer two overseas education bursaries of $5,000 each, renewable for two years, to provide financial assistance to Bermudian students pursuing a first undergraduate degree in accounting at an accredited university or college overseas.

"Bermuda has a severe shortage of students studying and professionals working in the accounting field," Minister of Education and Development Terry Lister said. "We applaud Bacardi’s new scholarship and grant initiatives and its past commitments to support a vital part of our economy and workforce – our island's future accountants." To be eligible for the scholarship or bursaries, students must have completed a minimum one year of post secondary education locally, i.e. at Bermuda College or one of the local high schools offering post secondary programmes or at an accredited institution overseas.

[Thailand] Southeast Asia Urban Environmental Management Applications (SEA-UEMA) Project

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) have entered into a contribution agreement on urban environmental management. This is in the form of Southeast Asia Urban Environmental Management Applications (SEA-UEMA) Project, which aims to improve the Urban Environmental Management (UEM) policies and good practices in the region. CIDA has allocated a total CAN$ 9.5 million over 5 years (2003-2008) for developing, managing and implementing this project by AIT.

The goal of the project is to contribute to the improvement of urban environmental conditions in Southeast Asia (SEA) region. It seeks to attain improved implementation and sharing of sound urban environmental management policies and practices in the three key urban environmental sub-sectors (water and sanitation, solid waste, and air pollution) in Southeast Asian region with poverty reduction and gender equality as the two crosscutting themes. For emphasizing both UEM education and its application, the project has adopted a two-prong funding approach.

Tips on Studying a Foreign Language (2)

Learning another language is not easy, but most people can learn a second language IF they are willing to put in the necessary time. Here are some practical suggestions for studying effectively, overcoming anxiety, and learning the grammar and skills necessary for success in foreign language classes

READING SKILLS TIPS:
First, read the vocabulary list for the assignment. Next, read the questions about the reading. Then read all the way through a new passage two or three times, guessing at meaning from context. Avoid word-by-word translation. It is a waste of time!

Isolate new vocabulary and study it separately. DON'T write between the lines! Make flash cards. Carry them with you and recite them several times during the day at odd moments. Overlearn them until they are automatic.

Isolate new grammatical forms and study them separately. Write the pattern on a flash card and memorize it. Write out and label a model sentence. When you encounter the form while reading, pause and recite the pattern to recognize the form.

WRITING SKILLS TIPS:
Pay attention to detail: notice accents, order of letters, etc. Compare letter-by-letter different forms (singular, plural, gender,etc.). Write out conjugations of verbs, declensions of pro-nouns, etc.,and check your endings. Memorize irregular verbs.

To master spelling, have a friend dictate 10 words to you. Write them out and immediately have your friend spell them correctly aloud while you look carefully and point at each letter. Repeat until you get all the words right.

Write (in your own simple foreign vocabulary words) a story you have just read.

LISTENING and SPEAKING are performance skills. You may do well at these if you are naturally outgoing. Students in foreign language classes often have difficulty hearing and speaking because they are anxious about making mistakes. It's OK to make mistakes! Have fun trying to speak!

LISTENING SKILLS TIPS:
Frequent the language lab. Read the exercises in your book first;then listen and read together; then listen without looking at the print. Say aloud/write what you hear.

Participate silently in class when others are called on to speak. Focus on the task; don't worry about how you'll do.

If you feel nervous, relax yourself physically by taking a couple of slow, deep breaths. When called on, pause, relax, and give yourself time to respond.

Listen while a friend dictates to you and write what you hear. Check for accuracy.

Practice: join language clubs, watch foreign TV, listen to foreign radio.

SPEAKING SKILLS TIPS:
Study out loud! Mimic the sounds of the language. Don't mumble. Although most people feel embarrassed making strange sounds, the language will soon feel more familiar to you.

When called on in class, say something, even it it's wrong: you'll learn from it. If you need a moment to think, repeat the question. If you don't know the answer, say in your foreign language, "I don't know" or "help!"

Practice with a foreign student who wants your help to learn English or with another class member.

STUDY EVERY DAY!
A foreign language course is different from any other course you take. Language learning is cumulative: you cannot put it off until the weekend. Study 1 or 2 hours for every class hour if you want an A or B.

DISTRIBUTE YOUR STUDY TIME in 15- to 30-minute periods throughout the day.
Focus on a different task each time: vocabulary now, grammar next,etc. Get an overview during the first half hour: spend 10 minutes reviewing dialog, 10 minutes learning new vocabulary, 10 minutes learning new grammar...so you'll at least have looked at it all. Approximately 80% of your study time should be spent in recitation or practice, including practice in the language lab.

ATTEND AND PARTICIPATE IN EVERY CLASS--even if you are not well prepared.
Class time is your best opportunity to practice. Learn the grammar and vocabulary outside of class in order to make the most of class time. Spend a few minutes "warming up" before each class by speaking or reading the language.

MAKE YOURSELF COMFORTABLE IN THE CLASSROOM.
Get to know your classmates, so you will feel you are among friends. Visit your instructor during office hours to get acquainted: explain your goals and fears about the course to your instructor.

LEARN GRAMMAR IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW IT.
Grammar is the skeleton of a language, its basic structure: you must learn it. Review a simplified English grammar text. Compare new grammatical structures in your foreign language to their English equivalents.

PRACTICE FOR TESTS by doing what you will have to do on the test.
If the test will require you to write, then study by writing--including spelling and accents. If you will be asked to listen, then practice listening. Ask for practice questions; make up your own test questions. Invent variations on patterns and forms. Over-learn: study beyond the point of recognition to mastery.

DEVELOP A GOOD ATTITUDE.
Have a clear personal reason for taking the class. Set personal goals for what you want to learn. Leave perfectionism at the door; give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them.

GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT.
Talk with your teacher. Form study groups among class members. Use tutoring services. Don't wait!

READING and WRITING a foreign language are analytical skills.
You may be good at these if you are a logical person who attends to detail. Train yourself through practice to notice and remember details such as accents and gender agreement.

2006 Heber Springs Business and Professional Women’s Organization (BPW) Scholarships are available to graduating seniors attending a public high school in Cleburne County. Four $400 scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement, application process and interviews.

Application requirements:

Applicant must complete requirements to graduate from their respective high school in the spring of 2006 with a cumulative GPA of 2.5.
Applicant must have a minimum 4-year high school attendance rate of 90%.
Participation in activities that foster personal growth, work ethics and social skills; such as participation in clubs, organizations, sports, volunteer activities or jobs.

GALESBURG - The Galesburg Community and Health Foundation and Foundation Service Guild are now accepting health career scholarship applications for enrollment in fall 2006. The scholarships will be available for students who are residents of the Galesburg Community and

Health Foundation service area and who are pursuing a health-related career and have been accepted or are currently enrolled in a program sequence.

ACRL/IMLS offer scholarships

The Institute for Library and Museum Services (IMLS) has provided funding for 30 new and aspiring professionals to attend a major national conference organized by the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).

Entitled “Libraries, Archives, and Museums in the 21st Century: Intersecting Missions, Converging Futures?,” the conference will explore issues of mutual interest to libraries, archives, and museums. It will be held June 20-23, 2006 in Austin, Texas, preceding the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, June 22-28, 2006. The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin will serve as the primary host for the expected 300 attendees.

Students currently enrolled in graduate program of library and information science or archival or museums studies, or graduates from such programs with less than five years of professional experience, are eligible to apply for the IMLS-funded scholarships, which are designed to cover all costs associated with attending the conference, including registration, airfare, lodging and meals. At least 10 scholarships will be reserved for applicants from professionally underrepresented backgrounds.

The two-and-a-half-day conference program will include a series of plenary sessions that will address a broad range of topics from comparative viewpoints, including collecting purposes and strategies, audiences and access, legal issues, and professional education and development. A variety of seminar sessions and facilitated discussions will complement the conference theme. Participants also will be able to take advantage of special tours of the recently renovated Ransom Center and Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum, and other local cultural facilities.

General registration will begin in February 2006, with an early-bird rate of $195. Lodging at the conference hotel, the Stephen F. Austin InterContinental in downtown Austin, will include rates from $99 to $129 per night. Additional lodging also is available at the University of Texas at Austin San Jacinto Residence Hall.
